The difference in history is the country was united. Fought the adversity you speak of as a common cause. The adversity we are confronted with now has many faces, but division will do nothing to solve that. How can you fight a battle if you disagree on who the enemy is? How to fight the battle? If there even is a battle to be fought?
Sadly, the left controls A)the media, B)Education, C) the White House. C knows how to use A to control the recipients of B (who have been dumbed down with relentless indoctrination so as to inhibit questioning A).
The civil war is the only thing remotely close. The causes that are being fought now are equally polarizing, but far broader in scope. The complexity of communication has changed the battlefield.
