Anyway POWs were not allowed to leave before the end of the war.
If you treat kindly someone your behaviour can be interpreted two ways: (1) your are kind and you deserve to be treated as a friend; (2) you are weak and you deserve to be treated as a slave. It depends on the people on the other side.
