“Equal pay for women” is simply dishonest language. Neither McCain, I, nor any fair-minded person would not support making sure a woman and a man, doing the same job with equal qualifications, are paid the same.
What we object to is the feminist redefinition of “equal work” to compare apples and oranges. If the market says lumberjacks (a male-dominated profession) should be paid more than kindergarten teachers (a female-dominanted profession), then that’s what those jobs should pay. “Equal pay for equal work” means that we define “lumberjack” and “teacher” as equivalent, and require equalization of pay so the men (as a whole) don’t get paid more than the women.
Control for the legitimate differences in male-female workforce participation, and the pay differences shrink almost to insignificance.
