Such a vote will be a political disaster for the Democrats. Again, I point out that the Democrats’ political fortunes have never been more closely linked to the success of America’s enemies. They have put themselves into the position where some success by Gen. Petraeus, or a political breakthrough among Iraqi elites, or a genuine evidence of the effectiveness of the surge, would be horrible for the party. While some successes by the insurgents, particularly if they should, say, manage to kill a bunch of marines in a bombing, well that would be just terrific for the Democrats’ standing in the polls. A pretty despicable place to be, no?
This is why there are no Democrats on the Hill trying to work with the military or the White House to help the US win; they would be working toward their own political demise. And this is why the one Democrat who clearly wants to win and is trying to be helpful to the effort, has been run out of the party.
