Arts & Letters Daily has two good essays on this topic — both in the right-hand column, scroll down a couple pageviews. One of them is about powerful 70s-90s film critic (and champion of the anti-heroic, which as we see has degenerated into anti-America) Pauline Kael’s realization at the end of her life that “When we championed trash culture we had no idea it would become the only culture.”
