HT and wm- Right on! Look, I have NOTHING against someone wanting to learn a 2nd language IF THEY WANT TO, go for it…I just don’t like the idea of my “inability” or lack of desire, “embarrassing” someone that is running to represent ALL AMERICANS. It’s elitist and condescending of him to say that, especially when he doesn’t even speak a 2nd language himself! It’s all too reminiscent of his “clinging to religion and guns” statement.
Being bilingual is a wonderful thing, but NOBODY should be looked down on because they DON’T speak another language other than english…just like I don’t look down on someone that speaks only spanish.
And I do speak from experience. My wife is a Filipina…and would I benefit from learning Tagalog? Sure, you bet…but it is a hard language to master, and I personally have a hard time learning languages…so other than a few words, I haven’t, but fortunately…she speaks very good English. (They actually teach english in all their schools in the Phillipines.)
Even here where I live, in Southern California, you have whole neighborhoods and cities with nothing but spanish, chinese, korean, or vietnamese on their signs. It’s that way in many large cities across America. Doesn’t make them less American, or any less able to do business as they see fit, as most know how to speak some English…though it does make it less likely or near impossible that I, as an English only speaker, will do business there, but so what??? They survive (or fail) based on their own community identity, and that’s just fine…
As a voter, you have to be an AMERICAN citizen, NOT a citizen of THE WORLD! And as much as Obama would like us all to be better WORLD CLASS citizens…I’m sorry, I’m just happy being a first-class American citizen, and that’s all I really need to be.
Want to see the “world citizen” Obama in action next week running for President IN EUROPE????
It will be a HOOT and a HOLLER, and COMPLETELY and TOTALLY irrelevent except in his own mind, and the impressionable minds of his followers who will be amazed and astounded with the crowds he attracts.
