This horse-sauce about us needing to learn other languages *to become better Americans* has no intrinsic value. Multiple languages are a blessing for an individual citizen; but a disaster for a nation.
Ask any Walloon, or Quebecois. They both speak French, after all. Surely you would expect that fact to have enriched their respective national identities.
Well, I’m sure it is “enriching.” Not counting those times when they try to separate from Flemish Belgium, or secede from Canada.
