Russian missiles in Cuba keep coming up in this thread. The reasons behind their deployment to Cuba were totally different than the missiles claimed to have been sent to Venezuela.
The Russians (Soviets) had no solid fuel ICBMs at the time and they kept judging US by their standards and were paranoiac about us launching a first strike against them.
With liquid fuel only ICBMs their first wave response would only have been six or so missiles because you can’t leave a liquid fuelled missile ready-to-go on the launchpad.
But the Russians/Soviets DID have good solid-fuelled IRBMs (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles). Only by deploying them within strike range of the US could the Soviets balance up the glaring disparity between their and our nucler strike capabilities.

As for Stingers, no matter who had them they were no threat to US planes because their IFF module will not let them fire on US built aircraft.
