I remember in the runup to the year 2000, Time Magazine (it still had at least some relevance in those days) attempted to determine the Man (or was it “Person”? I forget) of the 20th Century.
Obviously many luminaries made the short list. Finally it came down to two towering figures: one in science, the other in statecraft. Ultimately Einstein was named and, much as I revere the memory of the great man, I strongly felt that WLS Churchill should have been named the Man of the 20th Century. I find it interesting that among their greatest contributions were those that led to the ending of WW II, each in his own way. It is altogether fitting that they should have shared their elevated distinction.
