Dear Mr. Bawer, America is very blind. Most of my fellow Americans are good people, but most of them , regarding of their education are not informed about other cultures and political systems.
Most Americans, are not aware that racism, inequalities are more deeply present in most Non Western societies regardless is such society is an Asian as China, a Latin America as Mexico or Brazil, an African nation like Rwanda, Nigeria, an Islamic like Sudan etc.
They are not aware about that Anti Americans is a dogma used across world cultures as a foil to prevent world cultures to face hard facts
That most of the social, racial ,economical problem are home made , they are tooted in their own culture , not America fault
Most Americans sadly intermingling support Multiculturalism , which is a Trojan horse. Most Americans are supporting national hara kiri .
Even Conservatives and Religious people are in self denial.
Once upon the time, the Catholic Church was one of the social tools for assimilation. Catholic schools used many years ago to promote melting pot and Americanization. Today from Mormons to Catholics and all in between, Galvanization, fragmentation of America though Multiculturalism is the norm for religious institutions.
Social Conservatives, under play up , the social conservative values of immigrants but many of them seems to be blind to a reality that a fellow Mormon or Catholic who shares similar social values if he or she consider that their national/cultural identity is for example Salvadorian, Chinese, Ethiopian, Egyptian, and they teach their American born children and grandchildren that their nationality/culture is Salvadorian, Chinese, Ethiopian . Egyptian , spite of sharing similar social values than their American counterpart they are not American but Anti Americans, helping to erode and dissolve and destroy American nationality because a nation in order to survive , needs that their youth without hesitation or doubts identify as part of that nation, as part of the nation culture and feel strong attachment, identification , loyalty, love and pride otherwise when there is not attachment, loyalty, love or pride, and identification , American national identity is destroy . We became Americans when after several generations European settlers started to identify as Americans over Britons .
Can we ever learn the lessons of history and to be aware that just holding conservative social religious values is not a yardstick to measure who is a good American
