one explanation is that Bill Clinton is the only person who can claim leadership (today) of the fracturing-before-our-eyes Democratic Party. Obama had a frost-fest with Schumer. Pelosi had a raucous caucus and then flew to Oslo. Durbin and Tom Coburn agreed on the Bowles-Simpson plan. Anyone really think Harry Reid will still be Senate Majority Leader on January 5?
I would not read anything more into it, although, what a precedent for a sitting president to make.
Um, before anyone gloats over the dominance of Republican presidents, please be reminded that every Republican president before Reagan would be
called a RINO today, especially Lincoln, but excluding Calvin Coolidge, who was actually fairly liberal on “social issues”. The Coolidge family dog was named “Rob Roy” as a dig against Prohibition.
