I don’t think that is exactly right, it has a lot to do with it, but it is missing some of the story.
The classical Christian churches have become disillusioned with themselves, there effect on society has dwindled. The prevalence of the media, and social interaction has stopped the church being a social gathering place, and therefore a place of social stature.
As time goes on this is only going to worsen.
