Great contribution to the discussion. An “anything goes” society results in a “nothing matters” funk. I think a moral/ethical code is essential to any healthy functioning society. Religion does offers such a code. Religion also offers a social support system which many people find important in their life. Can you get such a code without religion? Based on my experience, I think you can. I am not a member of any religion yet I have a strong sense of what is right or wrong developed from my father and reinforced by a mentor in my profession. Neither my father nor my mentor were religious. Many traditional religions seem to be floundering in trying to adapt themselves to the “anything goes” societies of today. Whereas, Islam has taken a definitive stand. As you suggest, Ms. Booth is probably trying to fill the “anything goes” void in her life. We have support groups for everything else why not support groups for morals and ethics? It’s better than signing up for Islam.
