That’s basically what they do here in Australia. For the few who are still officialy “allowed” to own a rifle or shotgun (as opposed to the many, many people who very quietly kept their guns but are now criminal in doing so (gulp)) upon acceptance of a gun license a person gives the local police the power to randomly inspect their gun storage in their home.
The federal government pointed a gun so to speak at the states in the form of withholding funding (as usual) if they didn’t comply and implement the new laws the feds wanted implemented after the Port Arthur Massacre (the feds here have no authority over domestic gun laws).
A sad, sad tale that I suspect is not over and indeed hasn’t actually even really started yet, there has been some small gains made in various states to roll back some law.
Don’t let them take your guns, immediately after they took and destroyed 700,000 guns and outlawed them for 99% of the population the change in attitude in governance in this country was very noticeable, especially state governance. Fourteen years on and the descent into heavy handed and belligerent governance seems to be escalating, politicians are completely unshackled from any concern what-so-ever about their behavior.
