This is the first time I have ever seen the Founding Fathers’ views on Islam discussed. It begs the question: to what extent was the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause intended to merely indicate governmental impartiality between the various Christian denominations and Judaism, as opposed to some idea of considering Islam and pagan religions as possessing some kind of equal dignity and standing alongside the Judeo-Christian faith? I for one cannot conceive of the Founders desiring an imam or Buddhist monk or whatever to open Congress back then with prayer.
