If you know anything about Islamic law, you can’t leave it if you are born a Muslim. Fundamentalists kill you for that.

If his father was a lapsed Muslim, and he has a Muslim name, he is Muslim under Islamic law whether or not he claims to be. Technically speaking, if he keeps saying he is a Christian, he is an apostate Muslim and should be jailed or executed in countries under Syariah.
