Iran’s Anti-Israel Protest Reveals Regime Fearful of Domestic Opposition
wayne, if you read my comments on this and other blogs you would know that I nearly always attribute anti-Zionism to antisemitism and usually find little distinction between them regardless of the protestations of those who claim it’s “unfair” to attribute antisemitism to someone “merely” because they are hostile to Israel. However I do think there is another factor in play with the left – their opposition to Israel is based on their opposition to America and the West. Israel represents the West while her Arab and Muslim enemies are the nonwhite Third Worlders who are *always* the victims/good guys in their cosmology no matter how brutal, repressive and racist they are. I read an intriguing comment once that Chomsky, the archetypal left-wing anti-Zionist, did not care much about Israel one way or the other prior to the 6-day war which is when Israel was cemented as an American ally while the Arabs (until Sadat) sided with the Soviet Union (acutally it’s a bit more complicated than that but 1967 was a turning point). Having said that I *still* think antisemitism is a major component of anti-Zionism whether from the right, left or center.
