Actually, Wahabi *is* the Islamic reformation. Prior to that, Islam had drifted into a pragmatic liberalism which allowed coexistence with the West. When I visited Amman 30 years ago, it was 1/3 Christian, 1/3 Muslim, 1/3 Jewish. 1/3 of shops closed on Sunday, Friday, Saturday respectively – so tourists could find 2/3 of shops open all weekend.
The last thing we want is an Islamic reformation. Liberalism had almost defanged Islam. But it didn’t last. Liberals still act as if their mind numbing philosophy will eventually overcome Islam as it has so many others. But it doesn’t work any better than with Christianity. People leave liberal churches in droves because the platitudes are pointless. Unfortunately, liberal churches (e.g. Episcopal), having lost most of their members, become media “spokesmen” for Christianity, and tell the MSM that most christians want Israel out of Palestine, gay marriage, etc.
The reason orthodox Christianity can coexist with a secular government, is that such cooperation is explicitly commanded in Scripture. Christians are commanded to obey government authority, even pagan Roman authority, except where it directly goes against God’s law (e.g. do not obey orders to murder innocent Jews). The NT examples of civil disobedience were mostly about disobeying orders not to proselytize. And most Christian conflict with today’s PC US government involves arresting abortion protesters, or the guy preaching and handing out tracts at an Islamic or Gay rally – the very 1st ammendment rights that are supposed to be protected, and *are* protected when it is a pornographer or “I hate America” preacher.
