Support for Arizona Immigration Law Cleaves Along Racial Lines
I’m Hispanic and I am not at all nervous about going to Arizona. Then again my English is excellent, I’m light skinned, and I have identification, a driver’s license. A Mexican immigrant I recently talked to was very nervous about the law, and BTW by Mexican immigrant I mean a legal immigrant. He speaks with a thick accent although he speaks English very well. His main concern seemed to stem from the lies coming from Obama and others that the cops can stop you for looking Mexican and arrest you if you don’t have a passport. Once I explained the law he wondered what the big deal was. Understand as Correctional Officers we are considered law enforcement and understand what reasonable suspicion is. Sheriff Arpaio’s deputies, many of whom are Hispanic, also understand what it means and have been apprehending illegal aliens for years without having violated anyone’s civil rights as far as know. Not bad considering he and his agency have been under a Federal microscope for years looking for just that.
