Morph Aldrin’s statement into whatever strawman you wish, but if you doubt how space exploration inspires children, I would say you aren’t paying attention. Visit the Space Camp in Huntsville, or even easier, visit a classroom where they talk about it. My own 8 year-old daughter is a prime example, and it’s only because I introduced her to the history of the space program. She knows who Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins are, and she’s already inspired to learn more about space, science, and math so she can follow in their footsteps. She might not end up being an astronaut, but you can’t argue with the benefits of children being passionate about math and science (and honestly–especially girls).
It’s a high-tech world, and math and science are what kids are going to need to learn to succeed in the future.
