Jay,
You are correct about the Left, as their rhetoric is “all about power.” Then again “power for the sake of power” has been the story of American politics since the Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton.
On the other hand is that over the course of our two hundred some-odd year history the give and take of our power-seeking political class, combined with out professional legal class, and in further combination with our “national character” has somehow enabled us to limp along, gain strength, and do more “right” things than most other countries have been able to do in their history. In modern politics, I see no reason to doubt that this long term trend will continue. Modern American politics is no more or less rancorous than it ever has been, no more or less corrupt than it ever has been, no more or less vain than it ever has been and thus the long term still favors our somehow ambling our way into a decent future.
Given all that, every legal case must be represented by both sides of the argument. While there are those that will happily lobby for “fixing America” there are those that must continue to lobby for what should be conserved. Prosecutors versus defense attorneys. We each have our role to play given our particular experiences and proclivities. Let Liberals be liberals, and be confident that conservative voices are just as important. Be aware that all of us together, pretty or not, have made America what it is today. Debate and lobby, but keep respect in mind of the other side of the debate even if it is ugly. (Also keep in mind that political debate has been far more ugly, and outright dangerous, in our nation’s past.)
