The other day a Brit friend told me that we (“the Americans) had a big problem with the new, more powerful, and autocratic Russia. I responded by saying that it was less a problem for us than for his country. Suddenly the tone of the conversation changed. Much less anti-American rhetoric, much more about friendly alliances and special relationships. Americans would be wise to call out the alternatives to the present world order once in a while. (Note: Robert Kagan’s latest has a nice, concise overview of that Order).
