Interesting that you seem to know what the interviewer has and hasn’t read. Nice mind trick.
Anyway, it is just as plausible a hypothesis that the interviewer has read those works, but found their theses too simplistic a framework to be the basis for a wide-ranging interview covering the topics of Oren’s book.
Just as a matter of historical chronology, the hypothesis that US involvement in the Middle East has “always been about oil” is not going to be very explanatory when dealing with episodes such as the Barbary Pirates war, so why bother mentioning it?
