I love bashing Cameron like the next man, but I do think you are missing the point of this speech, and of this global Cameron tour.
Cameron isn’t a light-weight, like Obama. When he travels abroad he has a plan, and that is to advance Britain’s national interests. God knows why Obama travels – except to enlighten the world about his brilliance.
The speech to Turkey was an anti-EU speech. Cameron was telling the Germans and the French that they either allow Turkish membership of the EU, or Britain will revive its containment policy with the old Ottamon Empire.
What he said to Pakistan a day later was spot on. “Stop spreading terror, India is right to not trust you.” What has Obama said on this? Obama treats friends, like India, with contempt. Please don’t diss our PM when you’ve unleashed a foreign policy disaster like Obama on the world.
Cameron is a pragmatist. If we cant unpick the conflict between the Islamic and non-Islamic world, what will be our human future? Why shoud Turkey guard Europe’s flank and yet be treated with disdain? Does Rubin not recognise that Turkey may have national interests of its own.
I think this is what is so depressing about this article. It doesn’t recognise that nations have different interests. A statesman has to deal with this reality and do what is possible. By not even recognising the conflicting interests of European states, and of Turkey, the writer of this piece embarrasses the host site.
He needs an editor.
