For those readers who can read, I’d like to refute Ted’s characterization of Steyn’s column about the Virginia Tech massacre. The blog he links to mischaracterizes Steyn’s written opinion quite badly (is anybody surprized?).

I recall that column very specifically because it described one of the professors at Virginia tech who was a holocaust survivor. He moved to America and built a life. This aging man blocked the door to a classroom saving several of his student’s lives, sacrificing his own.

It was a beautiful tribute to immense heroism. And Steyn contrasted it with the behavior of the young students who became passive victims. He asked why the passivity? What made the aging professor more willing to confront the evil?

As I write this, I realize this story parallels the trial for “hate speech”. A victim of the holocaust recognized evil approaching and actively opposed it. Young people (like the population of Canada) had no clue that the evil could be opposed and as a result there were more victims.

Hmmm. Too bad Ted Can’t Read
