Terry, I take your point. I only read Maariv because it helps me brush up on my Hebrew, which I expect to be using daily in a few months.

I also agree with your assessment of your understanding of the ME versus an ‘American’ or ‘Israeli’ one. Not only do Jews I know here think I’m completely off-base in my opinions about how Israel should address its security needs, so do the majority of Israelis whom I’ve ‘shared with.’ So be it. I studied the history in both university and grad school, and evolved from a leftist position. I studied the history of Israel and the role of Labour as well (it’s ‘Labour’ in ‘Hebrew’ :) ). Martin Buber had more to do with the mindset of many early Halutzim than Raful Eitan; if you get my drift.

As to Barak – agreed. He plays the Israelis off against the Americans, for the benefit of Barak.
