I have been skimming rapidly down these comments and may have missed a few but yours is the first one I have found which addresses the really crucial point. As a retired physics professor I am astounded and deeply saddened by this action of the NAS. I hope there will be a strong reaction by the scientific community, but I am not hopeful.

Scientists are very intelligent people; unfortunately the word ‘intelligence’ is almost meaningless. Any brain can be very sharp in one or more areas and yet will be–perhaps almost by necessity- very mediocre in countless others.
