Indifference by Canadian citizens to loss of liberty is a sign of cultural decadence. Liberty bestowed as a birthright leads to a complacent populace and then inevitably to tyranny. No people will ever have a vested interest in liberty unless forced to fight for it. Did Thomas Jefferson not proclaim that “the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”? The war to protect liberty is ongoing and will ever be so.
Gibbon informs us that in the 5th Century, when the Vandals approached Rome, “the able youth of the city refused to man the walls.” Rome was sacked and the survivors sold into slavery. Is one lesson not enough? Apparently not. We must learn the lesson over and over at terrible cost. This time is no different, but we know the template. First they will come for the soapbox, next the ballot box, and finally the cartridge box. Defend the first so that we do not have to rely on the last.
Socialism is a seductive lie. It’s an evil bargain that trades personal liberty for guaranteed security. But the government powerful enough to give you all you want is also strong enough to take it all away. A person can enjoy only as much liberty as he is willing to defend. To surrender personal liberty is to renege on the duties of citizenship. Those who do will eventually reap a bitter harvest.
Every lover of freedom has a stake in this fight. Everyone one of us. Mark and Kathy stand now as champions for liberty. They need our support. I am sure they appreciate the words of encouragement.
