Anyone else seen the DS9 episode 2×25, “Tribunal”? The Cardassian legal system seems apropos here.

The accused is found guilty before the trial. The defense gets a Nestor whose job is to explain the proceedings to the accused. But the Nestor normally can’t address the court. For that, the court also assigns a Conservator to the case whose job is to clarify the prosecution’s case and to enable the accused to explain why he did what he did (guilt being presumed). All of this is televised as an example, “for the children”.
