During Carter’s admin, the Gov’t created a program to give money to communities to restore historic homes, spruce up downtown properties, etc. Our small community in Michigan’s upper peninsula received the money and a sign went up with the words “your tax dollars at work!” posted at the edge of a neighborhood of old historic homes, owned by private citizens. These were not depressed homes by any means and were located a block off or right on the shore of Lake Michigan. Work began with the free money (grants) and the rest of community were enraged. The sign came down within a week. It was hard to see Dr. and his wife get free money while the rest of the population were dealing with 20-29% interest rates. Just take em down and say “hell no”.
