I would be surprised if the sheriff in question did not have the power to deputize citizens. He could ask for volunteers and augment his forces at will. Secondly he could put out a national request to the lawful citizens of the United States and ask for volunteers to come to his aid. Once the news media got a hold of this not even 0 and the rest of the democrats would be able to live it down.
