“the parties of the left tend to be …less alert to the threat of revolutionary Islamism”.
With respect, I think you have got that bit exactly wrong.
It might, perhaps, have contained some truth in Europe some 30 to 40 years ago, but since then the Left has clearly hitched it’s wagon to Islam’s strong horse, in the hope of a ride to final victory.
The threat is a feature, not a bug, as the Left sees that Islam can do the violence and intimidation, while the Left continues to do the undermining. The Left has continued to nurture high immigration/low integration, enable the introduction of Sharia law, and make weak responses to terrorism not despite the glaring warning signs, but because of them.
Why the Left does this is, broadly, about the pursuit of control over the lives of others, and the destruction of the hated old social order. However, individual self-hatred is likely to also be a motive, since Leftists must know that while many of them might be allowed to live on as dhimmies, very few of them would be allowed to do so in any comfort.
We may have to leave this question to the philosophers, but the Left’s activities may perhaps be best understood as nihilistic, a selfish desire to see the world burn, with Islam as the flame-thrower.
