Flexo wrote, “The fact remains — McCain dumped his loyal first wife — a wife who remained loyal during his captivity and even remains loyal today”

Jim C. responded: “And Slick Willie didn’t dump Hillary, and she didn’t dump him. That wasn’t a problem for the left. Why should it be for McCain?”

It probably won’t be a problem for McCain, who will apparently get a pass for this very telling aspect of his character, but it’s a big problem for the country (and a big problem for the Republican Party and conservative movement) that, more and more, the outrageous and appalling become excusable and acceptable. Indeed, speaking of McCain’s character, in many ways he is the “Republican” Bill Clinton, sharing many of the same ambitious, egotistical, narcissitic, know-it-all characteristics. And all of that in Clinton has been terribly destructive to the nation. To be sure, it also gives a hint as to why we hear very little about defending family values from McCain.

As for Carol McCain’s feelings on the matter, since she generally refuses to give interviews, we are left with this one comment regarding the divorce, “I attribute it more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else.” If I had to play armchair psychologist due to her reticence to discuss the matter, I would suspect that, notwithstanding his mistreatment of her, she still loves him and, thus, remains publicly loyal to him.

McCain himself has admitted that he was in the wrong, “But my marriage’s collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity more than it was to Vietnam, and I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the war. The blame was entirely mine.”

Reports are that McCain is having problems with the Evangelical crowd. Well, you can be sure that he will be facing problems with the family-values crowd as well because you can be sure that, at probably the most inopportune time, the MSM is going to sink their teeth into this aspect of McCain’s history.
