Shef, I love Freakanomics, but that section of the book made a significant goof: it ignored the fact that the big surge in abortions has been among middle-class women, not among the underclass which produces most criminals; nor does it take into account that nearly all the US population increase in recent years has been due, not to our replacement-level birthrate (again, fewer middle-class children, balanced by more lower-class)- but to immigration, much of it illegal.
