Shef: I agree with you somewhat, but there seems to be a strong correlation. Even at the State and city level, you will frequently see significant drops in crime (typically violent crime) over time with a corresponding increase in private gun ownership. So, we can’t just dismiss it all as “schlock”. Although, after a thorough investigation is complete, the author’s point may be just that. But I’ll say this much for now: the more a potential violent criminal thinks his victim may be armed, the more thought he’ll give before committing the crime.
