Perhaps there is little significance in the produce picking arena but there are countless illegal workers in other areas – for example all of the construction trades, gardening, food services, etc. – where lower wages are definitely a factor.

When someone pays $10 per hour for gardening or $15 per hour for roofing, they are saving real money versus what they would pay if the workers were legal and had to follow all of our labor laws and regulations. In our town, the building department is stern and unyielding when it comes to your obligation to use only licensed contractors who obey all labor laws. And yet they sponsor and pay for a “day laborer” center from which illegal workers are picked up each morning by contractors and home owners and distributed all over town. No acknowledgement of any irony here, it’s just a result of strange bed fellows – the anal retentive control freaks in the building department and the liberal, only-enforce-the-laws-we-like city council being “kind” to illegal immigrants.

But the most instructive way to see this is that the users of these cheaper services are getting their “good deals” at the expense of others who pay taxes to educate and provide benefits and who pay higher health care premiums to cover medical care for those here illegally. It’s really a huge transfer of wealth to those willing to participate in the breaking of labor laws from those who play the game honestly.

This kind of thing is right up the alley of the liberal democrats and the current regime – so no surprise here.
