29. Samizdat – the New Orleans PD is not to blame here. While they are not that competent, there had been an exceptional number of murders earlier that weekend (by New Orleans standards, which means an incredible number per capita by the standards of any other city) so they were incredibly overworked during the entire period in question. Not to mention the political interference afterwards, due both to partisan political motivation by the corrupt Democratic city government, “protect the tourist trade” motivation by both city and state government in downplaying news of attacks on tourists, and the plain laziness and incompetence by Governor Jindal and his associates, who would rather not have to do anything about anything.

But you are entirely correct in thinking this means you should avoid New Orleans. Crime is astronomical there and you wouldn’t be safe. This is just an incident that got publicity. Few do unless someone is murdered. No one should go to New Orleans unless they have to. It’s that bad these days.
