This election pits a man with a solid identity, rooted in paternal and grand paternal tradition vs. a shape shifting, self inventor who can utterly change from day to day depending on what the pollsters say will sell. He’s a Gatsby, a charmer and a seducer. I’m preparing for the man with no fixed identity to win. Americans believe the myth of self creation, that we can slough off the paternal past and completely re-invent ourselves. When a slick Willy comes along, or an Obama, they activate in their followers narcissistic identification with them and everything seems effortlessly possible.
