Catering to perceptions is built into the progresive mindset, in which there are no absolutes (especially an external morality), but only subjective relative value systems. Anyone who plays this game is therefore effectively a progressive, no matter which party or religion they come from.
It has been said by others on these pages (Mona Charon?) that Muslims are legalistic and therefore can always formulate an excuse to find exception to their own religious laws. In addition to worshipping “the other”, this is yet another reason why progressives find common ground with Islam.
