My grandparents immigrated from the Ukraine as kids. The thing that sticks the most in my mind is that they always whispered when speaking to each other in their own home. They did this until the day they died. They never could overcome the fear that the government was listening and watching everything you did. They traveled the world in their old age and visited every continent in the world. They never went back to their home country and I asked them why. My grandfather said he was afraid that if they went they would never be allowed to leave and absolutely serious.
