To commemorate the Polytechnique massacre is right. But to make it an amblem for all violence to women to just stretching it too far. Women do need to be protected when in danger and the appropriate means for protection now exist for anyone who calls for help.
The importance of domestic (women and children) violence has been far overblown for many years. I am not justifying it in any way. But now the bias of police intervention is automatically against the man involved, just in case that there could be a risk for the «victim». similarly, the bias of divorce courts forces men to demonstrate that they are a good father, whereas women always get the benefit of the doubt that they are a good mother. Women claim that they want to be treated equally. Thenm why is there a tax provision allowing the party claiming a raise in divorce alloance? How many man can take advantage of a such a deduction for their lawyer fee?
