What a deft way of vitiating those neocons’ arguments of Saddam’s “threat”! Following this logic one could also say:
* “invaded Kuwait, blabbity blah blah”
* “invaded Iran, blabbity blah blah”
* “gassed the Kurds, blabbity blah blah”
* “paid moneys to suicide bombers, blabbity blah blah”
* “attempted the assasination of a US president, blabbity blah blah”
If you don’t like the consequences of a fact, just sneer and it will go away. And you can accuse your opponents of being a chicken hawks. So if you’re not a police officer (you f’ing cowards!) you can’t talk about locking up robbers and rapists! If you’re not a lawyer (you f’ing illiterates) you can’t talk about the law!
Shades of the 1970s-Strobe Talbott-type sneer re the Soviet Union: “millions dead in purges, blabbity blah blah — we just have to accept an alternative economic system to capitalism”.
