momof4 are you or a member of your family law enforcement officers or do you just drink their koolaid? When off duty a police officer should have no more standing before the law than any one else in the community. And do not even go with what a difficult job they have. The fact that this detective wants to play Rambo on his way to or from work raises questions about mental fitness for the job. If we were to accept the notion that any action whether on or off duty is legitimatized by their employment can we the public, then hold the municipality responsible if this same officer while driving drunk home from a bar on a Friday night?
