I hate to break it to you, “BC”, but the the ice “calving” in Antarctica discussed in that report you linked to is most likely the result of the increased thickness of ice on Antarctic land mass itself. As the ice increases in thickness, the downward pressure causes it to creep to the edge of the land and eventually break off.

“Calving” into the water is what glaciers do — as they grow.
