What is the temperature today in San Diego? Just asking. The newspaper is reporting 4 ranges, in degrees Farenheit: 56-46; 55-38; 44-26; and 60-30.

Is San Diego a special case? Maybe. Then again, in Columbia, Maryland, it’s reported today as 41-34; And I know from 12 year’s experience with the same gauge on my truck that I could persistently find a variance of + or – 5 degrees Farenheit within a mile from my home.

You can use a thermometer that is properly calibrated to a hundredth of a degree, but the margin of error for temperature measurements in Columbia, Maryland, near my house is at least + or – 5 degrees at any given time. In San Diego, the margin of error is much broader, depending, not on the thermometer, but on the thermometer’s location.
