It would be quite something if the new American President legitimized Ahmadinejhad through engaging him in direct talks, even while Iran’s own domestic situation under this despot continues to slide, with high unemployment, growing oppression in dress/social code and squelching of any remaining “free speech” (see ouster of university professors).
Even the ruling mullahs are said to be exasperated with him. There is jockeying for power behind the scenes when (inevitably) the ailing Khamenei is to be replaced.
Ahmadinejhad is the true fanatic’s fanatic who is focused on the “return” of the Mahdi. Chaos presages the return of the 12th Imam, so Ahmadinejhad pretty much hopes to foment as much chaos as possible in the region.
Iran’s material support for Hamas and Hezbollah (weapons, equipment, training) should ipso facto preclude negotiating with him. And it’s absolutely true (as written above) any “agreement” with the west would be summarily ignored, as convenient. Remember it is perfectly OK to lie to the infidel.
It’s hysterical (in an unfunny way) that any given individual would want to sit down with this nutcase. Except, of course, a chador’ed and obsequious Dianne Sawyer, who was substantially toyed with in her interview with Ahmadinejhad.
