When West Europeans complain that Americans don’t know anything about the outside world, I ask them what is happening in still other countries.
Asking a German, a Frenchman or a Briton what the news is from Bulgaria, Albania, Greece or even Poland and the Czech Republic just produces a dumbfounded look, temporary silence and then a spate of excuses. Once in a while they can tell you that some particular sports match has occurred. Taking them farther afield, for example to Southeast Asia or South America usually reveals utter ignorance.
Another fun trick is to give those Europeans a list of world cities and ask them to draw a map showing their correct placement. They frequently put LA where New York should be, Miami in Brazil or where LA should be, and forget about any Asian city.
