Beth at 74,
Let’s be very careful here. My ancestors opposed yours and I don’t appreciate any revisionism re the war.
That being said, we now are opposed by a common enemy that truly is “imperial” along with other undesirable traits. To quote Lee to Stuart on the 2nd day at Gettysburg upon the laters tardy arrival provoking a well deserved rebuke from the former. Lee let his anger pass and said “Help me fight those people”. Words for us both to live by now.
In closing you should know that I consider Lee and Jackson to be the two finest commanders ever produced in America. Each was an expert at manuever warfare repeatedly defeating larger forces. Jackson’s best work took place on the day of his fatal wounding at Wilderness west of Chancellorsville when he disengaged his force, moved it west about 20 miles and blasted Hooker after a complete surprise outflank. I have stood on the spot where Jackson was wounded. I consider him to be without peer as a field commander and admire his acumen greatly.
