I find that Der Spiegel article so frustrating.
I’d like to ask them, “Why are you waiting for leadership?” Why can’t Germany look at the danger Afghan heroin poses to Germany and decide to do on their own? Why can’t Germany look at Afghan kids beheading ‘spies’ in the name of Allah and make the kind of human rights judgment that they so easily and often make against the US? Aren’t the Taliban’s abuses of human rights a bit more troubling than those of Guantanamo? You lead! How about that? And if you don’t have the will or courage to do so (which we all know you don’t), shut up. You don’t need permission from the US to act.
They bitch when we lead, they bitch when we don’t lead. Why does everything have to depend on us?
