As for it happening at Ohio State (known to us Buckeyes as “Berkeley East”), this comes as no great surprise. Name an ultra-leftist, radical cause, ranging from pro-Palestine/anti-Israel to No Nukes, gun control, deep ecology, you name it, and it finds a congenial home on the OSU campus, driven by a faculty composed almost entirely of the kind of “academicians” Saul Alinsky dreamed of.
Along with Kent State, Ohio University-Athens, Toledo U, and Antioch, OSU is part of Ohio’s “Iron Pentagon” of leftist activism on campus, irrespective of the wishes of either students, their parents, or alumni. Antioch is admittedly under new management now, having gone down to financial defeat under an administration more interested in producing social activism than graduates who could pass a basic proficiency course in English or math. (A common bumper-sticker around the college a year ago said, “Forget Visualizing World Peace, Visualize Using Your Turn Signals”.) But that still leaves the rest of Ohio’s major campuses firmly in the “Revolution Now!” camp.
The amazing thing is that most people not either on campus or with children there don’t realize it. To me, this speaks volumes of just how well the radicals have done at making their dogmas the mainstream in academia while simultaneously neglecting to let the wider world know what they’re up to. Of course, most people outside of the academic world rarely read peer-reviewed papers- or Mother Jones, for that matter.
Probably the best course is for people who contemplate sending their children to an Ohio college is to carefully look over what actually is taught in the classrooms thereof, regardless of what it says in the course catalog. (Although some course titles can certainly be giveaways; beware of any class with the words “Alternative”, “People’s”, or “Post-Modern” in their names.)
In fact, the best course is probably to pick a college outside of the state, even if you’re from Columbus or Cleveland. The further outside the state, the better- think Kansas or Missouri.
Just avoid Massachusetts, California, Washington, Wisconsin, or Oregon, is all.
If all else fails, try Michigan.
